Mary Dixon Pot Holder

This sturdy pot holder makes a great housewarming gift.  Because it’s double paneled, it is impervious to heat, and you can toss it in the washing machine to clean.

Material: carpet warp (2 colors: “base” and “trim”), #7 steel hook (#6 will work, too).  14 rows makes a pot holder about 7 inches in diameter.  Each 800-yard tube of carpet warp makes about 6 pot holders.

With “base” color, chain 6, sl st with first ch to form loop.

Row 1: Ch 3, 11 dc in loop; sl st in top of first ch-3.  12 dc in loop.

Row 2: Ch 3, dc in ch3 from previous row, 2 dc in next dc, ch 1, *2 dc in each of next two dc, ch 1.*  Repeat between * until the circle is complete; sl st in top of ch-3.  There should be 24 dc in this circle (row).

Row 3: Ch 3, dc in ch3 from previous row, *dc in next two dc, 2 dc in next dc, ch 1, 2 dc in next dc* dc in next two dc, dc in .  Continue from * around circle, ending with 2 dc in dc, then sl st in top of ch3.*

Row 4:  Ch 3, dc in ch3 from previous row, dc in next four dc, 2 dc in next dc, ch1.  Pattern is as follows: 2 dc in dc before and after each ch1 space, dc in middle dc of each section.

Repeat Row 4 until there are 10-14 rows, depending on desired size.  Finish off.

Make two complete panels; finish one panel leaving a 12" tail of extra string.  Then use the “trim” color and put the two panels together, right sides facing out, with a sc through both panels' top dc; and 2 sc in each of the ch1 spaces.

At the beginning point, attach last sc to first sc with sl st.  Pick up extra length and ch the two colors together to form loop of desired length.  Attach loop to pot holder, finish off and pull extra lengths between panels to hide.
